At Fremstad Law, building trusted client relationships is central to our practice. Understanding the individual needs of each client is where we excel, and it is what makes our work so rewarding to us. Joel Fremstad founded the firm in 2008 with the vision of creating a practice that is capable of doing more than simply finding legal solutions, but also of having the wisdom and care to develop relationships with clients and to provide a more thoughtful, meaningful experience.
Relationships are fundamental to life, and Joel, in particular, can vouch for that. He has cultivated a thriving practice based on almost referrals alone. Since its start, Fremstad Law has continued to grow, develop, and expand. Alongside his extensive knowledge of business and real estate law, he has achieved this success by listening to clients and showing understanding, compassion, and consideration.
Before founding Fremstad, Joel was a partner at one of North Dakota’s largest law firms for nearly 10 years where he gained experience in employment law, business litigation, and collections. He went on to become General Counsel and Vice President of Human Resources for a privately held real estate and venture capital business with extensive small business holdings.
Joel was able to put the knowledge he garnered from his career to extremely good use when he founded Fremstad Law. This included his experience of starting and acquiring businesses and the complex associated challenges, as well as his direct work as a business owner and business attorney. His practice areas today include real estate, mergers and acquisitions, business formation, business/partnership disputes, contract, collections, and personal injury.
Joel clerked for the North Dakota Supreme Court after graduation, worked at a large law firm, was employed as Legislative Counsel to North Dakota’s Congressman, and worked in private industry. He is still a business owner and a successful entrepreneur outside of Fremstad Law. His experiences have provided him with empathy as well as knowledge since he has been able to put himself in his client’s shoes. His enthusiasm for developing highly positive and productive relationships with clients has made Fremstad the success it is today.
Joel’s skills in developing relationships have enabled him to realize another of Fremstad’s core values: moving forward. Fremstad aims to provide solutions that allow clients to move on, to find a way of reconciling themselves with the facts, and to achieve a result which makes economic and emotional sense. ”We often tell clients that sometimes even if you ‘’win,’ you aren’t going to like it, or us! And sometimes we can’t fix it or win it. But we will always move you forward,’’ says Joel.
Approachable and empathetic, Joel has been President of The Fargo Rotary Club, Board Chair of the Healthcare Equipment Recycling Organization, and a former board member of the Anne Carlsen Center in Jamestown, North Dakota. He is currently a member of the North Dakota Judiciary Standards Committee and has been a past president of the Cass County Bar Association, of which he is now a member. Joel is also a member of the North Dakota and Minnesota State Bar Associations and has presented to trade groups, businesses, and organizations on a number of subjects.
Joel is married to Jennifer, a High School Principal, and is the proud father of two. Back in high school, Joel played the drums and he was a Minnesota High School all-stater in wrestling. He also ran the Boston Marathon – in only 3:12!
